Christian Caregiver Connection

What is the Christian Caregiver Connection?

It’s a program that empowers your church to effectively minister the love of Christ to families affected by Alzheimer’s and related conditions. It’s a way for leaders and members of your church to successfully continue to be a meaningful and supportive presence in the lives of caregivers and the precious loved ones in their care.

It’s a way to remain connected!

When someone suffers from Alzheimer’s or a related condition resulting in severe memory loss and cognitive impairment, God has not forgotten about them or their family caregivers.

However, their friends and their faith communities often do (unintentionally and unknowingly) forget about them. This happens for many reasons. Caregivers tend to isolate. The life-changing role often keeps them from attending the church services and functions that mean so much to them. Church leaders and members don’t always understand the condition and what makes this kind of caregiving so different than caring for a loved one with other terminal illnesses. Caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or a related condition is a long on-going journey often lasting for many years. The stress on the primary caregiver is enormous.

In March of 2007, the Alzheimer’s Association announced that every 72 seconds someone in America develops Alzheimer’s. The greatest risk factor for Alzheimer’s is advanced age. There is currently no medical cure or prevention. One in ten people age 65 and older have it and one in two ages 85 and older have it. Currently, seven out of ten people with Alzheimer’s live at home and are cared for by a family member.

A caregiver for a loved one with dementia constantly pours unconditional love into someone who becomes progressively less able to return that love. Who is putting love back into the caregiver?

The Christian Caregiver Connection is all about love. The programs and events are not complicated energy-sapping programs leaving your pastors and leaders exhausted. They simply show the love of Christ to our sisters and brothers who are going through a very difficult time. It need not be a lonely or hopeless time for them when the people they have worshipped with and fellowshipped with remain connected to them.

We are highlighting in this section, descriptions of presentations by the Roches. See how they can help you form a Christian Caregiver Connectionin your church. The Roches have been involved in personal caregiving and caring for fellow caregivers for over twenty years. Many caregivers tell them, “I’ve lost friends and even my church seems to have forgotten about me since I became a caregiver.”

Lyn and Bill believe people care and churches care; they just don’t always know how to show that care . . . so they often do nothing. Let the Roches gently share with you how to effectively reach out to caregivers in your congregation and community.

Begin by giving caregivers the gift of “A Breath of Fresh Air” event on a Saturday morning. Invite church leaders to meet Lyn and Bill and enjoy a “Because You Care” presentation that Saturday evening. They’ll learn about care teams, Christ-centered weekly support groups. Then, on Sunday morning, the Roches will be happy to share “How To Be A Friend To An Alzheimer’s Caregiver” with your entire congregation. You can choose one or all!!

Caregivers give compassion and kindness to those in their care. They need constant strength and ways to strengthen their faith. We, their brothers and sisters in Christ, can be there for them. God extends to us a privilege and an honor to serve with Him ─ to spread His Love.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.” ─ Matthew 11:28
